A — Introduction
Four decades inside one organisation
Samik Bhattacharya has spent most of his adult life inside a single political organisation, and most of that time in roles that carried responsibility rather than visibility. He began attending Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh shakhas in Howrah as a schoolboy in 1971, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the early 1980s, and worked upward through its youth wing and its state secretariat during the decades when the party held almost no ground in West Bengal.
He was elected to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from Basirhat Dakshin in a by-election in September 2014 — only the second BJP candidate in the party's history to win a seat in that House. He served a single term. From 2020 he was the party's chief spokesperson in the state, and in April 2024 he was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha.
On 3 July 2025 he became the eleventh president of the BJP's West Bengal unit, again elected unopposed, taking charge at a ceremony at Science City in Kolkata less than a year before the state went to the polls.

Organisation
Youth-wing office in South Howrah and then the Howrah district, followed by eleven years as state general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, and three separate terms as state general secretary of the party.
2014 – 2021
Contest
A by-election win at Basirhat Dakshin and a term in the Assembly, framed by campaigns at Basirhat, Dum Dum and Rajarhat-Gopalpur that were not won but that recorded steep increases in the party's vote share.

D — Political and public life
A long apprenticeship in a difficult state
For most of Bhattacharya's career the BJP was a marginal force in West Bengal. The state was governed by the Left Front from 1977 until 2011 and by the Trinamool Congress thereafter; the BJP held no seat in the Legislative Assembly at all between 1999 and 2014. Organisational work in those years meant building structures with very little electoral reward attached to them.
That is the setting for his by-election victory at Basirhat Dakshin in September 2014, won by 1,586 votes — a margin of 0.84 per cent — and the reason it registered as a marker rather than a routine result. He was the second BJP member ever elected to that House, after a by-election win at Ashoknagar in 1999.
His public role since has been substantially that of an explainer: chief spokesperson for the state unit from 2020, then a parliamentarian, and since July 2025 the person formally answerable for the party's organisation across West Bengal.

Responsibility measured in tenure
The offices Bhattacharya has held are organisational before they are electoral. He spent eleven years as state general secretary of the party's youth wing, and three separate terms as state general secretary of the West Bengal unit itself — the post that carries day-to-day charge of the organisation. He sits on the BJP's National Council.
Since April 2024 he has also carried a parliamentary brief, including membership of the Standing Committee on Home Affairs and of the Institute Body of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences at Kalyani.
